What is NSF I-Corps™? A New Entrepreneur’s Guide to This Game-Changing Program

By Cristy Salanga, Patent Manager, and I-Corps Project Director, Northern Arizona University

Making an impact in this world begins with having a great idea. The challenge lies in turning that idea into a solution that customers or clients actually want. That’s where the NSF I-Corps program steps in, helping innovators bridge the gap between research and commercialization.

If you’re an academic researcher or an innovator curious about how to bring your ideas to market, this will introduce you to the NSF I-Corps program and show why it’s a game-changer for innovators across the U.S.

What is NSF I-Corps?

The National Science Foundation (NSF) Innovation Corps (I-CorpsTM) is a federally funded program designed to introduce academic researchers and new entrepreneurs to the fundamentals to think more broadly about the impact of their research or innovations, validate their ideas, identify customer segments, and provide pathways to commercial success.

Since its start in 2011, the program provides training, mentorship, and funding to university teams working on innovative technologies.

The ultimate goal? To reduce the risks of entrepreneurial ventures and increase the chances of success for early-stage startups, particularly those stemming from academic research.

Who Can Apply to NSF I-Corps?

The regional NSF I-Corps is open to teams of typically 1-3 people with an idea that solves a problem.

In the research setting, this often consists of:

  1. Technical Lead (TL): Often a faculty member or researcher leading the technical development.
  2. Entrepreneurial Lead (EL): Someone passionate about exploring the commercial potential of the idea, often a graduate student or postdoc working with the faculty member or researcher.
  3. Optional: Industry Mentor: An experienced industry professional who provides guidance about particular markets and connections.

Teams usually have a technology or research-based innovation, but teams across the university and local community that are passionate about their idea that solves a current problem across a variety of disciplines and industries are welcome to join.

What Does the Program Offer?

NSF I-Corps offers a combination of training, mentorship, and possible customer discovery funding (if eligible), including:

  • Customer Discovery Training: The cornerstone of I-Corps is talking to people. This experiential curriculum teaches teams to talk to real customers, test their assumptions, and refine their value propositions.
  • Mentorship: Participants are guided by experienced entrepreneurial instructors through the commercialization process and help them navigate the challenges of entrepreneurship.
  • Networking Opportunities: The program connects teams with a robust ecosystem of entrepreneurs from a variety of backgrounds in a cohort to create an engaging space.

How Does Regional NSF I-Corps Work?

The main offering is a 4-week course that meets once a week (online or in person) for a 3-hour session, covering all the needed curriculum and hands-on, constructive feedback with the I-Corps instructors. In between sessions, teams are talking to their potential customers to gain nuanced insights into the problem they are looking to solve.

Why is NSF I-Corps a Game-Changer?

  • Reduces Risk: By focusing on customer discovery, I-Corps helps researchers and entrepreneurs avoid the costly mistake of focusing on a solution that no one wants.
  • Solution Validation: Teams leave the program with a clear understanding of their target customer and whether the idea solves a problem for them.
  • Enhances Team Skills: The training equips participants with entrepreneurial skills that extend beyond the program, making them better prepared for future challenges.
  • Builds Confidence and Connections: With mentorship from experienced instructors and a cohort of like-minded individuals, teams gain the support they need to pursue their idea with confidence.
